Retrospective - ASR Sings!

ASR Sings! was an ambitious and innovative program launched by A Stage Reborn, designed to delve into the intricacies of music theory and choral singing, while also embracing the challenges and opportunities of digital collaboration. This retrospective looks back at the program's inception, its journey, and the vision for its future.
Exploring the Depths of Music
At the heart of ASR Sings! was a deep dive into a significant piece of Western and secular music. Participants had the opportunity to explore various arrangements of the piece, understanding its historical and cultural significance. One highlight was discussing a recording from the 1920s by boy tenor Edward Laugh, which played a pivotal role in the history of music recording, notably leading to the terms “gold master” and records “going gold.”
Mendelssohn and Musical Techniques
The program also focused on the stylistic influences and techniques of Mendelssohn, drawing connections to Bach and other predecessors. Participants examined Mendelssohn's use of point/counterpoint and his application of the Circle of 5ths in chord progression. These discussions not only highlighted Mendelssohn's contributions to music but also offered a broader understanding of musical composition and theory.
Hands-On Learning with Technology
ASR Sings! introduced participants to music notation and editing software, including MuseScore and Audacity. This practical component involved score markup and the technique of count singing, providing participants with hands-on experience in music arrangement and production.
Challenges and Learning
While ASR Sings! was filled with educational potential, it faced its share of challenges. Initially planned as a 12-week program, it became evident that a more condensed format of 4 weeks would have been more effective. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic added unforeseen difficulties, with both facilitators falling ill, which unfortunately impacted the program's outcomes.
Looking Forward
Despite these challenges, the vision for ASR Sings! remains strong. The program's initial run provided valuable insights into structuring and delivering music education in a digital format. As we look to the future, we are excited about the possibility of revisiting and refining ASR Sings!, incorporating lessons learned to create an even more impactful and engaging experience.
The Future of ASR Sings!
We believe in the power of music to bring people together and the potential of technology to break down barriers in arts education. With a renewed vision, ASR Sings! aims to return, offering participants a unique opportunity to explore, learn, and create music in a collaborative, supportive environment.
Stay tuned for updates on this program and how you can be a part of its next chapter!
